I don't know how much I love this space.

The space is not spacious at all nor with fancy set of lighting system.
All but different thing is the content with which I could taste the spirit, energy, passion and agony in life of the fresh artists mostly who I've been never heard about before.

What I appreciate more is their wide OPENNESS for the space.
They never be shy in sharing their effort of the display as curators or project managers.
And they never be restrictive in sharing their creativity as artists by proclaiming their intellectual property right too much, e.g., by prohibiting taking any photos.

It's just like the feeling of the good spirit of Internet of sharing freely as much as possible
though we need to be more smart in discerning good things out of garbages. :p

Candice Breirz: SAME SAME, The Power Plant@harbourfront Center Shoreline Toronto Nov 11 2009

There was an exhibition which was very much intriguing..
quite brand new approach.. at least for me.

'Candice Breitz: SAME SAME' features a selection of Breitz's multi-channel video works plus a major commission supported by Toronto benefactors Partners in Art. This is new work, Factum, made in Toronto and focusing on identical twins.

Breitz's work consistently explores the performance of identity, the tension between what she has termed "the scripted life" and self-fashioning....

i thought the identity issue is too common to be touched again
though it's through the quite different technical media of multi-channeled one.

주어진 사회적 자아 와 내가 만들어가는 나만의 나..

아이덴터티 를 주제로 한 남아공의 비디오 예술작가
Candice Breitz의 전시가 열리고 있었다.

메릴 스트립과 잭 니콜슨을 대상으로
그들의 출연작에서 capture 된 장면들을 엮어 만든
멀티 채널 비디오 Him + Her 를 비롯하여..

토론토에서 태어난 한국 대학생의 정체성 이슈를
인터뷰 형식으로 파헤친 Factum등
내겐 신선하고 새로운 시도의 작품이었다..
단지 매체의 선택에 있어서는..

허지만 정체성이란 주제는 너무 흔해서
진부함을 넘어설 수 있을지..
청춘 관람객들의 시기적 이슈가 맞아 떨어지는 것 말고는.

.한국사람 얼굴로 외국에 태어나
.유색 인종으로 백인들 사이에서 생활하다 보니
.아르메니아 인으로 예루살렘에서 어린시절을 살다보니

뭐 이런거 말고..
인간 대 神 의 아이덴터티 같은..
좀 더 재미있고 실질(?) 적인 문제가 더 다가오긴 한다.

난 젊었을때 all mighty 인줄 알았더니..
나이들어보니 그저 인간이었더라.. 으이구
난 성불을 했기 때문에.. 인간의 굴레에서 벗어났다.. ㅋㅋ
왜 신은 저처럼 만들어서 웬갖 능력의 지평은 다 열어 놓았으면서
우릴 죽게(mortal) 만들었을까..

솔직히 이런 신에 대비한 정체성 문제가 훨 재미있건만..
이 또한 진부하기 둘째가라면 서운하니..

.. 아니.. 더 진부하네..

근데, 솔직히 말이지..
대학교 때 니체 등과 술잔 기울이며
얼추 안주삼아 다 끝냈던 것 같던 이런 이슈들이..

돌아갈 날이 자꾸 다가오니..
왜이리 새삼 커져 보이냐는 거지..

사실은 나이들어감(aging)에 대한 원인이 규명되어가고 있고,
밝혀짐과 동시에 나이들어 가지 않음(anti-aging)에 대한
알약 혹은 주사 앰플들이 쏟아져 나올텐데..
앞으로 보게될 100년이 훨씬 넘은 프랑켄슈타인들을 본다는 것이
혹은 아직 정정한 증증조부들께서
..내가 소식적엔..하시며 수백년이 넘은 이야기들을
현실감있게 증증손자들에게 들려주는 모습을
볼수도 있다는 것이 과연 즐거운 일일지.. 자못 궁금한것인데..

이번 전시회에서의 theme인 개인의 사회심리학적 정체성을 넘어
생물학적 정체성에 대해서도 다시 생각해 보게 된다.

*사족으로 우리 DNA에 hardwire 된 life timer로 인해
최대한 100+ 몇년 이상은 살지 못한다는 주장이 있기는 하다..

both built or un-built, tries to push the envelop of
that they might imagine to be possible
in the architectural project,
converting restrictions and limitations into work
that celebrates the latent potential
and optimism of everyday life.

their work combines metaphorical/ interpretative themes,
with innovative organizational ideas,
material use and construction...

와 신나겠다.. ^,~
